The hypersonic missile flew to the target 8 times faster than the speed of sound.
The Russian Defense Ministry on Wednesday published a video of the launch of the Zircon hypersonic cruise missile from the Admiral Gorshkov frigate.
The footage shows how a rocket is launched from the upper deck on the bow of the ship from an open launch container, makes somersaults in the air and goes to the target.
On October 6, from the White Sea, the lead frigate of Project 22350 “Admiral of the Soviet Union Fleet Gorshkov” for the first time fired a Zircon rocket at a sea target located in the Barents Sea.
The missile, according to objective control data, successfully hit the target with a direct hit at a distance of 450 kilometers. The speed of the hypersonic missile was more than Mach 8 (eight times the speed of sound).
According to the Ministry of Defense, flight tests of the missile will continue. It is planned to equip submarines and surface ships of the Navy with the Zircon complex.
It is assumed that the Zircon rocket will have a maximum speed of Mach 9 (that is, up to 10.7 thousand kilometers per hour) and a flight range of more than a thousand kilometers.
According to the plan, the missile system will be adopted in 2020-21.
