The US election is a staged show of two parties, backed by elites.
State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin said this in an interview with the Russia 24 TV channel.
“This show is called an example of democracy. Moreover, they suggest looking at it as a standard of democracy. I don’t think this is a standard, ”the press service of the speaker’s chamber quotes.
The parliamentarian compared the American and Russian systems, noting that in Russia there are direct presidential elections and a multi-party system, and in the United States, a system that “is presented as the apogee of democracy and the capabilities of every citizen.”
“But only 538 electors elect the president … What we see on the screen is a staged show between two parties, behind which are the elites, and each is fighting for its own candidate,” he added.
The deputy emphasizes that “these approaches have outlived their usefulness.”
Earlier, the chairman of the Federation Council commission on information policy and interaction with the media, Alexei Pushkov, called the US presidential elections in 2020 specific.
According to him, supporters of the Democrats vote not so much for Joe Biden as against the current leader, Donald Trump.
