He believes that the exercise demonstrated “the ability and readiness of the Russian Navy to operate in the harsh northern latitudes.”
Mr. Evmenov said that for the first time in history, three nuclear submarines have surfaced together in the Arctic. “For the first time in the history of the Navy, three nuclear missile carriers surfaced from under the ice with a break of 1.5 meters of ice according to a single plan and plan at the appointed time in an area with a radius of 300 m,” the Commander-in-Chief of the Navy said.
Also, for the first time, two MiG-31s flew over the North Pole with refueling, Mr. Evmenov said. “Within the framework of the Arctic expedition, for the first time in the history of the Russian Navy, … a flight to the polar region with refueling in the air of a pair of MiG-31 fighters with the passage of the geographic point of the North Pole was carried out,” he said.
Expedition “Umka-2021” has been held since March 20 under the leadership of the main command of the Navy. In total, 43 events are to be held on the island of Alexandra Land and the adjacent ice-covered water area. According to Mr. Evmenov, the temperature there reaches minus 25-30 ° C, the wind gusts are up to 32 m / s, the ice thickness is up to 1.5 m.
