Russian Minister of Emergency Situations and Civil Defense (EMERCOM) Yevgeny Zinichev died today during a training exercise in Norilsk. This was reported on Wednesday by the press service of the Russian Emergencies Ministry.
“We are sorry to inform you that the head of the Russian Emergencies Ministry, Yevgeny Zinichev, was tragically killed while on duty while in Norilsk at the interdepartmental exercises to protect the Arctic zone from emergencies,” the emergency department said, specifying that the minister was trying to save a person.
According to Rossiyskaya Gazeta, the minister rushed to rescue a departmental cameraman who was filming a film about the exercise. The operator, choosing the best point for shooting, slipped and fell off a cliff. The head of the Emergencies Ministry was the first to rush after him into the water, but hit a stone in the water. Both were taken to the Norilsk hospital, but they could not be saved. Both the operator and the minister were killed.
The publication told about the unique “Arctic” exercises, which started on Tuesday in several regions of Russia.
