Detained two suspects of participation in the attack on Russian servicemen in 1999 in Dagestan.
The investigating authorities have obtained information about the involvement of residents of the Neftekumsky district of the Stavropol Territory Arifully Avezov and Akhmet Terekbaev in the commission of crimes, said the official representative of the RF IC Svetlana Petrenko.
According to the investigation, in mid-July 1999 these men voluntarily joined the gang under the general leadership of Shamil Basayev and Emir Khattab. They took an active part in the commission of grave and especially grave crimes.
From 7 to 24 August 1999, militants armed with automatic weapons, grenades and explosive devices, totaling at least 1,000 people, took an active part in an armed rebellion in order to overthrow the constitutional order and violate the territorial integrity of Russia. They committed an encroachment on the lives of Russian servicemen in Dagestan.
As a result of a massive targeted shelling, perpetrated by gang members in the territory of the specified area, 33 people were killed, and 34 people were injured of varying severity.
The criminal case is being investigated under the articles of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation “Encroachment on the life of a serviceman”, “Banditry” and “Armed mutiny”.
More than 80 members of an illegal gang have already been sentenced to long terms of imprisonment in this criminal case. Implementing the principle of the inevitability of punishment, investigators, with the operational support of the FSB and the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia, continue to identify the participants in the attack who are hiding from law enforcement agencies.
