Minister of Health of the Altai Republic Sergei Kovalenko was detained on suspicion of corruption, according to RIA Novosti and Interfax, citing sources.
According to RIA Novosti and Interfax, Kovalenko is suspected of taking a bribe. Now the minister is in the investigation department, RIA Novosti reported, without specifying which department – the Investigative Committee or the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
According to Kommersant, the investigation believes that the minister received bribes for concluding contracts for the supply of medical devices. In total, their size was about 5 million rubles, the newspaper writes.
According to the newspaper, searches are underway in the republican ministry of health, and security officials are also searching the offices of supplying companies in Novosibirsk, Kemerovo and Barnaul.
The press service of the Investigative Committee for the Altai Republic could neither confirm nor deny this information. RBC turned to the press service of the regional health ministry for a comment.
Kovalenko has been heading the regional Ministry of Health since 2019. Prior to that, in the 2000s, he worked as a surgeon and head of a department at the Mayminskiy regional hospital. From 2008 to 2012, he was the deputy head of the Maiminsky district.
