Former South Korean President Park Geun-hye, who is serving a prison sentence for abuse of power, will be pardoned as of December 31. This information was disseminated by the country’s Ministry of Justice.
As noted in a statement, on the eve of 2022, the government has decided to pardon more than 3,000 people, including the former president, as of December 31.
A special New Year’s Day meeting of the South Korean government on pardons, commutation of sentences and restoration of powers for a number of individuals was held on December 24. It was noted that, based on humanitarian considerations, those who will receive pardons include convicts in difficult circumstances, such as the elderly or the seriously ill.
