The Latvian State Security Service (SSS), together with the Military Intelligence and Security Service (MIS), detained two people on suspicion of long-term cooperation with Russian military intelligence and providing it with sensitive defense information, the SSG reported to BNS.
They specified that the suspects were detained in 2021 as part of two criminal proceedings. Both were arrested.
According to the SSS, the men met with representatives of the Russian military intelligence on the territory of Russia.
On December 30, the State Security Service handed over to the prosecutor’s office the materials of one criminal case with a request to begin criminal prosecution of the suspect. According to the investigation, he used contacts established in the course of his professional activities to receive, summarize, analyze and transfer to Russian military intelligence information about the combat capabilities, procedures, plans and exercises of the Latvian armed forces, defense procurement and the expanded NATO contingent on the territory of the republic. As a result of procedural actions a significant amount of evidence was obtained, including documents and information carriers.
The defendant in the second criminal case is also suspected of many years of cooperation with Russian military intelligence, providing information related to Russian military interests.
