The great-grandson of writer Leo Tolstoy, Sergei died in the U.S. state of Maryland. He was 99 years old. This was reported by the Washington Post newspaper.
Sergei Tolstoy was the only son of Vera Tolstoy, granddaughter of Leo Tolstoy. The descendant of the famous writer in the last years of his life lived very modestly, in an apartment partly paid for by the state. The aristocratic life and benefits that the famous family name brought him were in the past. Sergei Tolstoy’s manners and taste were so refined and even slightly extravagant that one of the brands of cigars was named after him.
At the end of his life, Sergei Tolstoy was seriously ill. He had problems with his heart, as well as hearing and vision.
