The situation on the Kyrgyz-Tajik border has escalated and there is an exchange of fire. This was reported by the Border Guard Service of the State Committee on National Security (SCNS) of the Kyrgyz Republic.
“From 17:30 to 18:00 the frontier guards of the State Committee for National Security of the Republic of Tajikistan unilaterally blocked the Batken-Isfana road in the area of Tөrt-Kîchî of Batken region. In order to prevent escalation of the conflict the head of the department of the State Committee for National Security of the Kyrgyz Republic for Batken region, colonel Kyalbek Tolonbaev and the head of Batken border detachment, colonel Rustam Mirshakirov went there,” reads the official report of the Kyrgyz border service.
The SCNS also informs that the border patrol units deployed along the border in Batken region are on a heightened regime.
According to the State Committee on National Security of the Kyrgyz Republic, at 19:35 Bishkek time, the situation has worsened because of the use of fire and weapons by the Tajik side on its border guard units in the area of Chyr-Dobo, Batken region. Major exchanges of fire between Kyrgyz and Tajik border guard units were observed in Tort-Kocho and Chir-Dobo areas. The Tajik side uses mortars and grenade launchers.
