President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko agreed with Russian President Vladimir Putin on refinancing the Belarusian debt in the amount of $ 1 billion.
Today, August 27, the prime ministers of the two countries will discuss this issue. Earlier, the President of Belarus said that the political crisis is putting pressure on the country’s economy, says Kommersant.
According to the Ministry of Finance of Belarus at the beginning of July 2020, the external public debt is more than $ 18 billion.
“We have agreed with the President of Russia, and today our Prime Minister will hold talks with Mikhail Mishustin on refinancing,” – said Mr. Lukashenko at a meeting in Minsk (quoted by BelTA). According to him, we are talking about refinancing this year $ 1 billion from the debt to Russia. “That is, we will keep this billion dollars by agreeing with Russia. And this will be a good support for our national currency, ”he explained.
The President of Belarus said that he would not allow the collapse of the national currency. According to him, the country has enough reserves to “keep the course acceptable for us at an acceptable level”.
Over the past few days, the demand for cash in Belarus has grown. Citizens are withdrawing money from current accounts amid rising dollar rates and rumors of freezing deposits. Since August 9, after the victory of Alexander Lukashenko in the presidential elections, protests have continued in the country.
