Germany will offer to suspend the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline if it does not receive the expected response from Russia to the incident with Alexei Navalny.
German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas stated this to the ZDF TV channel, says Vesti.ru.
“We will put all the options on the agenda and make a decision at the appropriate time,” the minister said. “Russia, by taking part in the investigation, can contribute to the fact that such a decision is not made” (TASS quotes).
In the first days after the incident with Navalny, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that Nord Stream 2 remains an economic project and should be completed: “Our opinion is that Nord Stream 2 should be completed. Navalny “.
But then in Germany and the United States, calls for increased pressure on Russia began to be heard more often, and Poland offered Germany a replacement – the Polish-Danish gas pipeline Baltic Pipe instead of Nord Stream 2. Several German parties decided to use the situation to increase their political weight. Representatives of the Soyuz-90 / Greens parties, the liberal Free Democratic Party, and the Christian Democratic Union demanded to suspend the project. US President Donald Trump announced the need to stop Nord Stream 2 to punish Russia.
Press Secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov has repeatedly stated that Russia is ready for all-round cooperation with the FRG. But the German authorities have ignored Russian requests for details of the case. Before Navalny was exported to Germany, there were no toxic substances in the body of the oppositionist.
Russia continues to wait for a response from Berlin to the request of the Prosecutor General’s Office, but Germany has not yet provided any evidence of Navalny’s poisoning.
As reported, on August 20, during a flight from Tomsk to Moscow, Navalny became ill. The plane made an emergency landing at the Omsk airport, after which the oppositionist was hospitalized in the intensive care unit of the city hospital.
On August 22, he was transported by a special plane from Germany for treatment to the Berlin clinic Charite. According to German doctors and the Ministry of Defense of the Federal Republic of Germany, they found traces of substances of the group of cholinesterase inhibitors in Navalny’s body. A number of drugs and a large group of neuroparalytic poisons are based on these substances, including the Novichok poisonous substance, which first became known after the poisoning of former GRU employee Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in 2018 in the UK.
