The foreign ministers of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia called for the release of opposition leader Alexei Navalny.
He was detained on January 17 at Sheremetyevo airport after returning from Germany, where he was undergoing treatment after the alleged poisoning.
“The detention of Alexei Navalny is absolutely unacceptable. We demand from the Russian authorities his immediate release. The European Union must react quickly, if it is not released, then it is necessary to consider imposing sanctions against Russia in connection with this action, ”reads a joint statement by Edgars Rinkevich (Latvia), Gabrielus Landsbergis (Lithuania) and Urmas Reinsalu (Estonia).
The FSIN stated that the detention of Alexei Navalny was connected with the department’s claim to replace the suspended sentence assigned to him earlier with a real one in the case of embezzlement from Yves Rocher. The politician was taken into custody pending trial.
