Foreign Ministers of Poland and Ukraine Zbigniew Rau and Dmytro Kuleba wrote an appeal to US President Joe Biden with a request to “use all means” to prevent the completion of the Nord Stream 2 project.
The ministers published their letter in Politico magazine.
According to the foreign ministers, Russia “used one of the most powerful weapons – the dependence of its neighbors on energy supplies, especially natural gas.”
“We urge US President Joe Biden to use every means at his disposal to prevent the completion of the project. The United States continues to be critical in this matter, ”the letter says.
At the same time, Kuleba and Rau noted that they respect Germany’s right to express its point of view regarding the gas pipeline, but “firmly convinced that such projects cannot be viewed narrowly through the prism of bilateral relations.”
“The West, led by the United States, cannot afford to cringe in the face of blackmail that runs counter to everything we stand for,” the ministers said.
Earlier, Russian leader Vladimir Putin, commenting on the situation with Nord Stream 2, said that Western representatives “want to make Russia pay for their geopolitical project in Ukraine.”
As the head of Naftogaz of Ukraine Andriy Kobolev said, Nord Stream 2 is, without exaggeration, a “matter of life or death” for Ukrainian citizens.
At the same time, the head of the Bundestag Committee on Economics and Energy, Klaus Ernst, urged not to discuss with the United States the “mechanism for stopping” the construction of the gas pipeline.
