The Secretary General of the Council of Europe Maria Peichinovich-Buric, in a letter on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of Russia’s accession to the Council of Europe, noted the role of Moscow in the joint work of the organization for the protection of human rights and democracy.
The CE Secretary General recalled that since joining the organization, Russia has ratified about 70 conventions and protocols, including the European Convention on Human Rights and the European Social Charter.
“In a common European family of 47 countries, Russia plays a vital role in working together in the interests of human rights, democracy and the rule of law within the framework of a common legal field,” – quotes the text of her letter to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov TASS.
Earlier, Lavrov, in his appeal to the CoE Secretary General, called on not to allow the Parliamentary Assembly to turn “into an arena for settling scores” and “imposing non-consensus documents”, as well as strive for freedom of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) from political and ideological bias.
