Prime Minister of Ukraine Dmytro Shmygal announced the beginning of the third wave of coronavirus in the country and did not rule out the introduction of a total quarantine regime in the event of a worsening of the situation, writes Strana.ua.
According to him, Ukrainian doctors have recorded a steady increase in the incidence over the past few days. “Most likely, we will have to return to the lockdown model, which has already been in Ukraine. Although I would really not want to,” said Shmygal.
He explained that the government will be forced to take such measures, despite the exhaustion of business and society with sanitary restrictions. The politician called the coronavirus vaccine that has recently arrived in the country as salvation for Ukraine. “But you see what a shortage of vaccines is in the world, and the vaccination process itself will take one and a half to two years. This time we need to somehow live,” the prime minister said.
According to the latest data, more than 1.3 million people have been infected with the coronavirus in Ukraine. Over the past day, a new surge in the incidence has been recorded in the country, the number of patients with COVID-19 has increased by more than 10 thousand.
The first batch of the Indian-made Covishield coronavirus vaccine – 117 thousand doses – was purchased by Ukraine on 23 February. The next day, the drug was sent to the regions, and medical personnel began to vaccinate them. Immunization of most of the population will begin after citizens from the most vulnerable categories to the virus receive the vaccine.
Later, the president of the republic, Volodymyr Zelensky, promised to vaccinate all Ukrainians from the coronavirus by the end of the year. In turn, the former head of state Petro Poroshenko called the vaccine “shit”.
