The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) banned Russia from using the song “Katyusha” instead of the anthem at the Olympic Games in Tokyo in the summer of 2021 and in Beijing in February 2022. It is reported by Inside the Games magazine.
CAS rejected a request made by the Athletes’ Commission of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) in January this year. The organization clarified that the ban on the anthem applies to any songs associated with Russia, including Katyusha.
On January 14, the chairman of the ROC athletes’ commission and the Olympic champion in fencing, Sofya Velikaya, said that it was decided to replace the anthem of Russia at international competitions in the next two years with Katyusha. She said that everyone in Russia knows and loves this song.
In December last year, CAS approved a two-year ban on Russian athletes from flying the national flag at the World Championships and the Olympics. During this period, Russia will also not be able to hold such tournaments.
