German political scientist Alexander Rahr on the air of the Russia 1 TV channel expressed doubts that the United States would be able to decide on a trade war against Germany over the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.
“I think that Nord Stream 2, if the Americans ban it, then sanctions will have to be imposed against the German state and state structures. <…> This is already a trade war, not against the company, but against Germany itself. I think that the Americans are unlikely to agree to this, although Biden is in a difficult position because he is being blackmailed by Congress,” Rahr said.
In addition, the political scientist expressed the opinion that the Europeans understand that it is not profitable for them to participate in the aggressive international policy of the American leader. Rahr noted that US actions are now directed not only against Russia, but also against China, economic relations with which are extremely important for the European Union.
Nord Stream 2 envisages the construction of two strings of a gas pipeline with a total capacity of 55 billion cubic meters of gas per year from the Russian coast through the Baltic Sea to Germany. The project is actively opposed by the United States, which is promoting its liquefied natural gas to the EU, as well as Ukraine and a number of European countries. The United States imposed sanctions on the gas pipeline in December 2019.
