Russia poses the “greatest” military threat to European security, according to a strategy for the modernization of the British armed forces, which was published by the Kingdom’s Ministry of Defense.
The 76-page document titled Defense in a competitive age states that the renewal of “the Russian armed forces, the ability to integrate all state activities and the appetite for risk make Russia both a skillful and unpredictable player.”
“Russia has the capability to conduct precision strikes at range and to deny freedom of action to the UK and our allies through a highly capable integrated air defence system. Russia can therefore present a significant threat to the UK’s ability to support our forces and protect our interests in Europe, the eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East”, – noted the UK Department of Defense authors of the document.
They also indicated that Moscow is investing in the creation of a submarine fleet and deep-sea equipment that could damage communication cables.
London also drew attention to the creation by Russia of torpedoes capable of delivering warheads to the shores of opponents.
The strategic document states that Great Britain is going to expand its presence “in the Far North, the Baltic and the Western Balkans.”
In total, London plans to spend 85 billion pounds to equip its armed forces over four years. The money will go, among other things, to create a “system of air combat of the future”, which uses aircrafts with crews and drones, autonomous platforms, sixth generation Tempest fighters and drones used by groups. Britain also did not abandon plans to modernize nuclear submarines with nuclear weapons, follows from the document.
As Vladimir Putin said at the end of last year, Russia is not going to get involved in a new arms race that has already begun, but will ensure its security.
