The video of the singer Manizha for the song “Russian Woman”, with which she will represent Russia at Eurovision this year, has become the most popular on the official YouTube channel of the contest.
In three weeks, the video received over 6.7 million views. This is one hundred thousand more than the previous leader, the Serbian group Hurricane with the song “Loco Loco”.
Manizha (Manizha Sangin) is a Russian singer originally from Tajikistan, who gained fame after publishing music videos on social networks. In December 2020, she became the first UN Goodwill Ambassador for Refugees from Russia.
In Russian society, the attitude towards a piece of music is very ambiguous: in the singer’s work they saw an insult to the dignity of Russian women.
Earlier, the editorial staff of the Veteranskie Vesti newspaper contacted the Investigative Committee, considering Manizhi’s stage performance insulting the dignity of Russian women and violating national harmony. The song was also criticized in the Federation Council and the Russian Orthodox Church. The speaker of the upper chamber Valentina Matvienko instructed to request information from Channel One on how the procedure for choosing a performer from a country for a prestigious international competition is going on.
The Eurovision Song Contest, canceled in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, will take place on May 18-22 at the Ahoy Arena in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
