NATO is faced with a change in the distribution of forces in the world due to the “partly very aggressive” behavior of Russia, said German Chancellor Angela Merkel at a congress organized by the CDU/CSU alliance.
As RIA Novosti reports, among other “challenges” the politician named the strengthening of China, the coronavirus pandemic and climate protection issues.
“We are unanimous that there is no shortage of large-scale challenges, I can name a pandemic, but also a big task to protect the climate, as well as a change in the distribution of forces due to the economic and political strengthening of China and partly the very aggressive behavior of Russia,” said Angela Merkel.
She stressed that the United States remains Europe’s most important partner and a natural ally of Germany.
In March, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg accused Russia of “aggressive behavior.” He said that the EU and the North Atlantic Alliance will not be able to cope with the “challenges” emanating from Moscow alone.
The Russian Foreign Ministry has recommended NATO member countries to tackle internal problems.
