After confrontations during his first meeting, there were discussions between the police department in charge of personal protection and the campaign team. Law enforcement officials told Zemmour’s staff that they needed to strengthen their law enforcement.
In one altercation, Zemmour, 63, himself was injured – he suffered an arm injury after being attacked by one of his opponents.
His candidacy creates an atmosphere of extreme tension. This was clearly evident during his first big meeting in Villepinte. SOS Racisme activists came to the meeting and Zemmur’s supporters got into an altercation with them. The confrontation then escalated into a fight.
Eric Zemmour announced his presidential candidacy last week. Some commentators have compared him to former U.S. President Donald Trump, pointing to a combination of nationalist and populist talking points in his speeches. At the rally, he announced the creation of the “Reconquista” party (the name refers to the process by which Christians reclaimed the Iberian Peninsula from Muslims). According to polls, more than 10 percent of voters are ready to support Zemmur, but still less than his main rival on the right-wing, Marine Le Pen, who also intends to run for president.
