The United States tried to discourage Brazil from buying the Russian Sputnik V vaccine. It is reported by RIA Novosti, citing a report (p. 48) from the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
It is emphasized that one of the divisions of the American Ministry of Health “used diplomatic relations” to prevent Cuba, Venezuela and the Russian Federation from increasing their influence in the region. We are talking about the countries of Latin America. Washington offered them technical and humanitarian assistance. And Brazil was directly asked to abandon the Russian vaccine against COVID-19. For this, the office of the health attaché was involved.
The creators of Sputnik V consider such actions unethical. “Countries must work together to save lives. Attempts to discredit vaccines are unethical and fraught with additional loss of life,” the message posted on Twitter said.
Earlier, the chief US infectious disease specialist, Anthony Fauci, praised the Russian vaccine. “The data that I know is good enough,” the doctor said. Sputnik V ranks second in the world in terms of the number of countries that have approved it. The effectiveness of the drug is 91.6 percent.
The pressure on the Brazilian authorities from the United States did not bring results.
Recall that the production of the Sputnik V vaccine in Brazil began in mid-January 2021. The production capacity should allow Brazil and neighboring countries to be provided with a Russian drug against Coronavirus.
