The Khmeimim airbase in Syria was attacked using long-range multiple launch rocket systems, said Vyacheslav Sytnik, deputy head of the center for reconciliation of warring parties.
Russian air defense systems repelled the attack, the rear admiral emphasized.
He clarified that the incident took place the day before at 19:45 Moscow time, the shelling came from the territory of the Idlib de-escalation zone, controlled by illegal armed groups.
“There are no casualties or material damage. The Russian Khmeimim airbase is operating as planned,” Sytnik concluded.
The armed conflict in Syria has continued since March 2011. The government forces are opposed by militant detachments belonging to various armed formations. In August 2015, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad asked Russia to provide military assistance. Moscow sent an aviation group, which was quickly deployed at the Khmeimim airfield. Since September 30, 2015, Russian planes have launched targeted airstrikes on militant targets in Syria.
