The joint comprehensive plan of action (JCPOA) on the Iranian nuclear program will have no chance of being preserved if Washington can still insist on extending the arms embargo at the UN security Council. This was stated by the Iranian Ambassador to Russia Kazem Jalali in an interview with the “Opinion” program on the TV channel “Russia-24”.
“UN security Council resolution 2231 provides that in October the sanctions against Iran will be lifted, but even here the Americans have declared that they will not comply with this resolution. Recently, they initiated a meeting of the UN security Council in order to create prerequisites for extending the arms embargo against Iran. If the US succeeds, it will be possible to state the death of the JCPOA, ” he said.
Jalali stressed that in this case “there will be no trace of the compromises laid down in the JCPOA”. He also expressed gratitude to Russia for joining China in opposing the resolution adopted by the IAEA (Great Britain, France, and Germany) demanding that Iran grant access to two sites where the Agency suspects possible storage of undeclared nuclear material.
“The Russian Ambassador to the UN, Vasily Nebenzia, very eloquently stated, citing the analogy of modern American realities, that” the US has put its knee on the neck of the Iranian Republic.” We believe that American policy is doomed to failure. An example of this was the UN security Council meeting, where no one supported the speech of US Secretary of state Michael Pompeo, and, on the contrary, advised the US to return to the JCPOA,” the Iranian Ambassador continued.
According to the diplomat, the economic component of the deal also did not show results.
“The Americans withdrew from the SFPD and imposed sanctions against us, caused direct damage of more than $ 200 billion, but in fact the damage is much greater. When the Europeans said they would keep the JCPOA, we negotiated with them, and INSTAX (Instrument in Support of Trade Exchanges) was created. But only one transaction passed through it. Thus, the economic aspect of the transaction was emasculated, ” – he said.
