US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo on Saturday at a meeting in Nicosia with President of Cyprus Nikos Anastasiadis expressed concern about the entry of Russian warships into the ports of the island.
“I expressed concern about Russia’s money-laundering activity and the regular calls [of Russian warships] into ports,” the State Department’s press service quoted Pompeo as saying in an interview with reporters. Pompeo argued that allegedly all Russian warships entering Cypriot ports do not conduct humanitarian missions in Syria. The secretary of state did not provide any evidence for his words.
“We asked the president to take our concerns into account,” said the chief of American diplomacy.
As stated on September 3, Russian Ambassador to the Republic of Cyprus Nikolai Osadchiy, the United States, seeking a ban on the access of Russian military vessels to the seaports of Cyprus, is seeking to embroil Moscow and Nicosia. The United States is on the territory of Syria illegally, while the Russian contingent is present at the invitation of the legitimate Syrian authorities.
