For the first time, US President Joe Biden has publicly called on the Russian authorities to immediately release Alexei Navalny.
“Navalny’s politically motivated conclusion and Russian attempts to suppress freedom of assembly are an issue of deep concern to us and the entire world community,” Biden said in his keynote speech on foreign policy at the State Department.
“Navalny has been targeted for exposing corruption. He should be released immediately and unconditionally,” Biden added.
The Russian Foreign Ministry had previously advised foreign politicians commenting on the situation with Navalny to respect international law and deal with the problems of their countries. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov noted that statements by Western politicians on this topic are “like a blueprint.”
In turn, the press secretary of the Russian president Dmitry Peskov said that the Kremlin does not intend to listen to statements from abroad about Navalny.
The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, called the behavior of Western diplomats and Western Foreign Ministries in the situation with the trial over Navalny as a chain of political staged actions.
