Some of Russia’s actions pose an “unusual and extraordinary” threat to US national security.
This was stated by US President Joe Biden in a letter to Congress, the text was published on the White House website.
Biden stressed that Russia is attempting to interfere in elections, conducting cyber attacks and using the mechanism of “transnational corruption”, undermining security in countries and regions important to US national security, violating the principles of international law, including respect for the territorial integrity of states.
“The specified harmful external activities of the Russian government <…> represent an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security, foreign policy and economy of the United States,” the message of the US leader noted.
Biden added that in this regard, he declared a state of emergency and imposed sanctions against the Russian Federation.
Earlier today, the US introduced new sanctions against Russia. Restrictive measures affected the sovereign debt of Russia, as well as 32 Russian individuals and organizations. In addition, the American authorities decided to expel ten Russian diplomats.
