Moscow aims to break down American democracy, as Robert O’Brien believes.
The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) claims, that Russian authorities want the Senator of the state Vermont Bernie Sanders to become the presidential candidate from the Democratic Party. This was announced by the assistant of the American Leader of National Security Robert O’Brien in the interview with CBS, broadcasted on Sunday.
O’Brian says he has heard from FBI, that Russia wanted the victory of Bernie Sanders in the fight for the nomination of a candidate from the Democratic Party. They most probably would like him to become a president for very сlear reasons. He wants to spend resources on social programs, and quite possibly, he need to transfer them from the defense [budget].
“Russia has always aimed to somehow intervene in the elections because they want to split the Americans. They want to undermine our democracy”, – as the American leader’s assistantsays.
“Look, I think there is a range of countries, such as Russia, China, North Korea, Iran, which would like to influence our elections, to get the candidate, who, as they suppose, will be better suited for their country”- he says.
As O’Brien claims he does not oppose US intelligence agencies publishing information, regarding possible interference in the elections. “I am not against it,but the decision isn’t up to me”. The intelligence community is highly concerned and is quite attentive to sources and methods of [acquiring information] and I understand it, but personally, I’m not against it”, he said, answering the corresponding question of the journalist.
Earlier, the US President Donald Trump, in the interview with reporters, declared, that he was not informed about putative attempts to assist the election campaign of Sanders.
On Friday, The Washington Post wrote, that the on a briefing, US authorities informed Sanders about attempts, as they suppose, by the Russian Federation to help him in the eleсtion campaign. The type of assistance that was talked about is not yet specified by the publication. As Russian president’s press secretary Dmitry Peskov informed the reporters, that Kremlin regretfully waits, that as the presidential elections are coming in November 2020, there will be more and more “paranoid messages” about Russia’s alleged attempts to interfere in the election process. Peskov highlighted, that they “have nothing common with the truth”. The senator himself expressed his conviction in the fact, that the article was published right now to weaken his positions before an important election campaign.
