Washington recently made a sensational statement. Pentagon chief Mark Esper held a press conference at which he announced that the withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan would begin within 10 days. This statement put Donald Trump in an awkward position. After all, on February 29, he said that the withdrawal of troops would begin on the same day, but this turned out to be false information. According to the information provided, it is planned to reduce the number of American troops in Afghanistan to 8,600 within 135 days.
However, information leaked to the network that the White House leader is planning a personal meeting with the leaders of the Taliban movement. On this information, Esper said that he does not have enough information about this issue. It also emerged that the US will continue to conduct operations against the Islamic state group.
Also, it’s important to mention, that US troops entered Afghanistan almost 19 years ago after the September 11, 2001, attacks. This is the longest military campaign in American history. More than 2,400 US military personnel were killed during the conflict. For millions of Afghans, the agreement is a chance for a peaceful life after four decades of war and infighting.
