A quarter of Americans don’t know who their country fought during World War II. Every tenth American citizen believes that the United States fought against the USSR.
This is evidenced by the results of the “Sputnik.Opinions”. The correct answer was given by 77% of respondents who recalled that the US was at war with Germany. Another 67% of respondents called Japan an enemy of the United States during World War II. Another 5% believe that the US was at war with China, according to Sputnik Radio.
The survey also revealed other gaps in knowledge of world history. For example, 69% do not know or incorrectly answered the question what day is celebrated on May 8. 63% incorrectly defined the Holocaust, and 12% do not know what it is.
It is worth noting that at the beginning of the year, the US released a presentation in which it named France the most affected country by the war, and America – the country that defeated Hitler. Shortly before that, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, speaking in Poland, accused the USSR of allegedly starting the war and causing the Holocaust.
Russian President Vladimir Putin responded by publishing a large article in the National Interest magazine, in which he recalled that Western countries, including the United States and Britain, financially supported Nazi Germany, hastening the beginning of World War II.
